Mythical Monsters of
GREENLAND

For Kids

flag of Denmark
flag of great britain

This lecture is for schools both in and outside Greenland, such as private and public schools and institutions, and organizations in or with an interest in Greenland. We recommend ages 9 and higher.

Can you outrun a Qivittoq/Mountain Walker? How is the Ikusik/Elbow Crawler teaching us to be careful in the fjordS? Is a ghost always dangerous?

Maria will talk about her own background and where her interest in monsters began, how to actually catch monsters in modern Greenland - and why a good scare is essential during the long winter months in the Arctic! She will talk about the most famous of the Greenlandic mythical creatures such as the Mother of the Sea, the Mountain Walker, the Sun and Moon and many others, and how the Tupilak went from feared revenge monster to fabulous merchandise. She will also tell the tale of her hunt for a mammoth!

Monsters and myths are a fascinating way to learn about Greenlandic culture and history, as well as get the little, creatives minds going.

This lecture is not only for teaching culture and history, but has been held before in connection with creative writing classes, or art classes.
